Algae are common nuisances that can invade swimming pools if proper maintenance and water chemistry are not maintained. There are three main types of algae that can affect your pool: green algae, yellow/mustard algae, and black algae.

Green Algae

Green algae is the most common type and typically appears as a greenish color on walls and in the water. It thrives in warm, sunny conditions with poor circulation and inadequate sanitation.

Yellow/Mustard Algae

Yellow/mustard algae is more stubborn than green algae and can appear as a yellowish or brownish tint on pool surfaces. It often clings to shady areas and can be resistant to typical algaecides

Black Algae

Black algae is the most difficult type to treat as it forms roots deep within pool surfaces. It appears as dark spots or streaks that are hard to brush off.

Treatment

If your pool is affected by algae, it’s important to take action promptly to prevent further spread and potential health risks. Here are some steps you can take to treat your pool:

1. Brush: Brushing the affected areas will help loosen the algae from surfaces and make it easier for treatment chemicals to work effectively.

2. Shock treatment: Use a high dose of chlorine (shock) to kill off existing algae. Follow manufacturer instructions carefully when adding shock to your pool.

3. Algaecide: Depending on the type of algae present, choose an appropriate algaecide treatment. Be sure to follow directions on the product label for best results.

4. Filtration: Run your filtration system continuously until the algae problem is resolved to help remove dead algae particles from the water.

5. Water testing: Regularly test your pool water for pH, chlorine levels, and other chemical balances to prevent future outbreaks of algae.

Prevention

By staying proactive with regular pool maintenance, proper circulation, adequate sanitation, and routine cleaning, you can minimize the risk of algae growth in your pool and enjoy crystal-clear water all season long.
